How to Mix Concrete

When deciding how to mix concrete properly, the nature of your upcoming pour, the correctness of your concrete mix for your pour, and the complexity of your mix design itself will influence how to best proceed.

Generally speaking, when mixing concrete, the most frequent and easiest mistake you can make is to use too much water.

A thin mix often seems like it will be easy to work with; however, your concrete will be weak and prone to excessive cracking. There are two options that you have for your project: either purchasing ready-mix concrete or mixing your own concrete from dry mix bags.

For small jobs, mixing concrete from bags by hand is a great way to go. All of the coarse and fine aggregates are included in the bag mix.

Trial and error when mixing concrete by hand will provide you with a true knowledge of which mixes work well, and which just plain stink!

For larger jobs, or if you plan to be doing any type of concrete work on a frequent basis, I definitely recommend learning how to properly mix concrete with a concrete mixer . If used properly, a good quality concrete mixer will allow you to get your mixing done much more efficiently and perhaps even improve the consistency of your batches of concrete. On a creative note, an idea that can add definite value and attractiveness to your kitchen is to create a concrete countertop.

Concrete countertops are customizable, attractive, and highly durable.

Please note that crafting an effective concrete countertop mix requires more meticulous efforts than mixing for a simple slab or spread footing.

A splendid DIY skill is to be able to calculate the amount of concrete needed for your pour so that you develop a natural sense for what you need.

By using tried and tested concrete calculating formulas, you can calculate the quantity of concrete needed for your next rectangular or circular pour. However, if you don't have the time, or the patience, to calculate concrete cubic yards or concrete bags needed manually, I've created a handy and FREE concrete calculator that you can use when figuring how much concrete you will need for a forthcoming project.
